Why you should replace your air filter this winter

December 13, 2016

We encourage preventative maintenance on your heating and air conditioning equipment all the time, but this doesn’t just mean annual tune-ups – it also means checking your air filters. It’s an easy way to help keep your system working smoothly and improve your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it all yourself! Today is the ideal time to inspect your filter, as winter comes to a close and the warmer weather is on the horizon. There are many benefits to changing out your air filter, such as:

Extending the life and efficiency of your system
A definite way to trigger a system failure is a dirty air filter. Extra dirt that accumulates on your filter can cause your whole system to operate harder than it should to keep the air in your home cool. Not only will it hinder the performance of your system, but it can increase your energy costs and result in your system overheating.

Enhancing indoor air quality
The purpose of an air filter is that it grabs contaminants through your air system before it enters your residence. After the filter has been in for a while, the less efficient it is in trapping things like dust and mold that can impact the health and comfort of your home, particularly if someone in your home suffers from allergies or asthma. With warmer temps around the corner, pollen and mold are especially expected to be hanging around and you would prefer they aren’t circulating in your home. A quality, clean air filter will help you breathe easy and stay healthy all through the allergy season.

Examine your system or ask your HVAC technician for guidance on how frequently you should be swapping out your filter. For many filters through Clean Air HVAC, we suggest an annual change with the highest MERV filter available. Not sure if it’s the ideal time to change your air filter?
