Do I Need to Cover My Air Conditioner?

With cold weather approaching in Pacheco, you may be questioning when you should cover your outdoor air conditioner. Of if you need to cover it at all.

Your AC unit is a tough piece of equipment. It’s engineered to withstand inclement weather, including excessive temperatures and relentless precipitation.

Sometimes covers cause more problems, because they can trap moisture. Additional wetness inside your equipment can cause internal pieces to rust or turn moldy.

While putting on an air conditioner cover is a personal choice, there are two times of year that are great for using a cover for an extended period of time—fall and summer.

That’s because yard waste during those seasons—grass clippings, twigs and leaves—can build up and obstruct your system’s airflow. Decreased airflow means your air conditioning unit works harder and may use more energy to cool your residence.

Looking for other ways to make your air conditioner run efficiently? Regular AC maintenance from Clean Air HVAC heating and cooling professionals can help. We’ll clean and lubricate your system, and examine critical components. This often allows us to spot issues before they begin.

How to Choose an Air Conditioner Cover

If you determine you want to cover your air conditioner, here are several tips on choosing the right cover.

Avoid Full Covers

To keep air flowing, a protective air conditioner cover should only encompass the top of your system and several inches on the side.

Full AC covers can trap water inside your equipment, potentially eating away at metal components. It could also make your AC a welcoming home for rodents, which could chew wires.

Don’t Use Plastic or Vinyl Covers

Plastic or vinyl covers impede air, which could cause moisture to build up inside your air conditioner. The best type of material is one that lets in air, like canvas or mesh.
